We heard whispers of a secluded village in the western region of Bali that used kratom ceremonially so naturally, we made our way to the lush island paradise. We set out to make contact with this village in hopes to discover their secrets and learn more about their culture.

While we were concerned we’d be met with hostility, we were actually welcomed with open arms and given the opportunity to speak with the leader of their village, a kind Balian (or shaman) who’d been looking over his people for decades.

With our guide translating for us, we were told that they used kratom to celebrate and pay homage to Barong, a panther-like spirit known as the king of spirits and leader of the hosts of good. Barong is their guardian angel, he protects these people and in hopes to keep him around, the people take their special kratom and perform a dance ritual.

They allowed us to stick around, try the kratom, and witness their dance. As the effects started to kick in, we were met with the most mellow and loving feeling we’ve ever felt. At this point, we knew we had to share this with the world.

Asking the Balian where we could find these kratom trees, he agreed to bring us along with him but made one simple request: share it with the world, but keep this place a secret.

Coming to an agreement that they would send us the leaves, we set out to the location where they sourced their kratom deep in the forest. When we got close, we started to notice something familiar, those footprints we’ve always been searching for.

We asked the Balian about the Motark Monster, telling him about our search for the legend. He grinned and simply replied: “Ah, yes, the Motark. He is the protector of Barong’s Sacred Red. He has been our guide to these trees for generations.”
